The number 1500 comes from the fact that in order for this pistol to be used in IDPA Matches, 1500 HAD to be made. That rule has been changed to; "have a minimum annual production of 2000 units (discontinued models must have had a total production of 20,000 units)" maybe someone that is knows IDPA/IPSC Rules better could give a bit more info on this.

Also when Colt first released these 9x23mm 1911A1s they did NOT come with the 38 Super Kit, that was added later to boost laging sales, Dealers were also sent kits for the 9x23s that they still had in stock that came without the kits.
