.38 S&W Ammo

I was recently given several hundred rounds of .38 S&W ammo. I hate to admit it but I'm not very familiar with this caliber. Wasn't this the predecessor of the .38 Spl? If so, can I shoot it in my .38 Spl. / .357 revolvers? I would really hurt not to be able to use this much free ammo.

It normally won't fit in most .38 Specials as the case is slightly larger in diameter. It might fit in some older guns.
