I'm a pilot who flys into LAX every 2-3 weeks. I'm spending Saturdays & Sundays leaving Monday mornings. Bringing a gun with me isn't a problem. If I can take a good intermediate handgun course or tactics course I'd be delighted. I'll always have a crew car too. Thanks for any suggestions you may have......Keith

These guys are the only ones I know of who schedule regular training close to the L.A. area:

http://www.tacfire.com
http://www.ftatv.com
http://www.securityopsgroup.com
http://www.firearmstraining.com

The only one I have direct experience with is firearmstraining.com. School operated by Greg Block, and is very organized. Once the shooting portion of the class begins it gets up to speed very quickly.

I also have regular correspondence with Dennis Kennedy who runs securityopsgroup. He's very active in CCW matters here in KA and their school seems to specialize in Executive Protection training along with general firearms training. Hope this helps.

Keith,

Randy Cain, Louis Awerbuck, and John Farnam teach classes at the Angeles ranges once or twice a year:

http://www.guntactics.com
http://www.yfainc.com
http://www.defense-training.com

I think John Farnam is coming in October, and Louis Awerbuck in November.

Although I haven't taken courses from the following instructors, I have heard very good things from other students who have:

http://www.intltactical.com
http://www.tftt.com

And ISI in Piru also has regularly scheduled handgun courses; I've shot a few IDPA matches at their range, and they're good people:

http://www.isishootists.com

Hope this helps,

Ed

Keith,

Randy Cain is definitely a first class instructor. I just had a tactical handgun class with him at the beginning of the month. Could not give a higher recommendation to anyone.

Regarding intltactical, their classes are taught by Scotty Reids who's a former LAPD SWAT officer. Some of my friends from LAPD including a firearms instructor give their highest recommendations on his classes.

I have taken several classes from Greg Block and he is first class. And if you have never done simulation training, you owe yourself an hour in his PriSim system. I consider that hour one of the best I have spent in training.

Duke:

ISI in Piru (1 hr N of LA) http://www.isishootists.com was my home range for several years. Mike Dalton is excellent, and he does one-on-one training. They have multiple IPPA matches monthly too. Check it out.

Gabe Suarez is an great trainer too.

In your backyard is a guy I train with when he travels to MT, Name is Pat Goodale ( http://www.pgpft.com ), an ex USMC Force Recon officer. His home range in in W.VA... not too far. Pat is a superb trainer, and though I haven't been to his range, I hear it's excellent... including a shoot house. Good luck.

Duke,

My company, Shooters-Edge, sponsors
about 20 or so courses per year -- all
big name instructors -- in the Los
Angeles area.

We have Awerbuck, Randy Cain, Bill Jeans,
Dane Burns, Carl Taylor of Surgical
Shooting, Andy Stanford, and a bunch of
others. Our classes are small, intense,
and usually have about 20% Law Enforcement
attendance.

You can see our 2002 Schedule on our web
site: http://www.shooters-edge.com
Go to the link: 2002 Schedule.

There are some other events being planned
that are currently on the schedule and will
be added later.

We generally do not cancel classes once
scheduled, even if we lose money. We only
cancelled one class in two years -- over
40 courses.

There is a link there to contact me. You
should get on our e-mail list so that I
can make sure you get reminders.

Bruce Krell
Shooters-Edge.

I can give my recommendations to Bruce's sponsered classes. I've taken a pistol class with Randy Cain and a basic gunsmithing class with Dane, through Bruce's company. Besides offering top notch classes, the people you'll meet are fantastic. Also, Bruce is a real character. We always give him a hard time. Good natured of course.
