Read both of Jerry Kuhnhausen's books first, then come back after that. I could not tell from your post whether or not you are experienced with 1911's. That will make a difference as to what you want to put together and what you'll need to learn. I do not believe in the "cheap shooter" project concept. For all the effort you will expend in parts, tools, and labor, make a GOOD shooter instead.

For all supplies, you can get them Brownell's. As far as what you need...that's kinda up to you. Skimp on parts costs by getting cheap parts, and you'll suffer the joys of rescuing poorly made and out of spec components.
