As of yet, im still saving up for a couple of projects. Just for shits and giggles, I asked my local gunsmith about a full house gun, time frame, etc. He quoted me 2 weeks and an undisclosed price for a 1911 on the frames and slides I asked about (STI, CMC, Caspian, Wilson). Is it possible to gain quality work (without a backlog) in 2 weeks or is that stretching it?

I don't know if I'd trust my local 'smith that well. He once quoted me over $2K for a 1911 built using a Springfield base to his specs. Bilby used to work with him and charged only $1.3K for the same work on a Caspian frame and slide.

Hey Bufford...Sounds like you're gonna' get ya' one made the way you want it! Great!

I just ask myself if I like the person enough to give them money...simple as that. If you do, then you must already trust the person to be willin' to fork over that kind of jack. You WILL be workin' with them from now on and that's not somethin' to take lightly. Have you checked refs' and seen pictures or examples of the guys' work? You should know what to compare it with after bein' around these guys for awhile! If you're comfortable with the guy, you'll work on the details til' you get what you want...I know if I'm gonna' like someone in the first few minutes...You just need someone you can trust to give you what you want. If they can and you're comfortable workin' with them...you'll be happy.
Good luck...and let us know how it goes! Maybe you could invite them to join up here?
More the merrier!

I have dropped off a box of parts at my gunsmith and received back a complete gun in less than a week several times. Two cases were IPSC Open Class Raceguns. After over 30K rounds through most of my 1911’s, I have yet to have any. He has even turned out some outstanding AR-15’s and SR-25’s for me in less than two weeks. So yes, it can be done.

Given that the parts are on hand and you've got the money....an experienced smith can fit, detail and assemble a "very" high quality, full house s/s 1911 in about 20 hours.

Priority work is usually a value added charge. Just show 'em the money.

(ditto on the Colorado gunsmith)
