You can do as you suggest with the welding and all but its not necessary. Several guns I deal with have been "De-80ed" by ordering a slot filler for the frame from Brownells. The other parts in the slide can be removed and the hole left open. I have been told that the firing pin and firing pin stop must be replaced with the none 80 parts. This system seems to work just fine, several of the guns I am aware of have several thousand round thru them.

Some peoples thoughts on this is that you are increasing your liability be deactivating a safety device. Sort of like pinning the grip safety.
