There is no common sense reason for duplex loads. Modern powders vary from can to can and can become very erratic when mixed with another kind of powder when old duplex loads used in the '60's are duplicated.
With all of the powder types on the market, it is possible to pick a standard powder that will accomplish any goal you want to attain.
The only modern duplex loads are for black powder. A .44 caliber loaded with black powder can be improved by adding two grains of red dot before dropping the black powder charge. This makes a very clean burning black powder load. You may be able to accomplish the same thing by making paper cartridges using cigarette paper soaked in potassium nitrate, which, when fired, makes a very primnative nitrated black powder load that shoots slightly cleaner than using straight black powder, and even traditionalists allow for use of nitrated paper cartridges as "using traditional black powder.
