Depends on thickness of the front strap and what lpi checkering you want and how much of the front strap you want covered with checkering. Easy answer is yes ( to get some checkering on the gun). The reality is maybe (to do it correctly).

My suggestion? Shoot serrations.

It is always best to start with a bald strap on any of the textures. If you have serrations, best to stick with them IMO.

Anything can be rebuilt it is just a matter of time and money. Sometimes it is better to start with a new gun if you don't have what you want now and it is already modified.

Case in point I have two guns that are almost 20 years old. There are cosmetic blemishes that I can fix on them. I have always put it off because of the time and effort involved to make them as perfect as could be. If they were a cutomer's gun I would decline the work. Since they are mine and the guns mean a lot to me I decided after shooting them yesterday to rebuild them again. I could build a 3K$ gun in the time it will take to do either of them. Get my point  That is $1500 in labor down the tubes for a good cause....well I think it is a good cause anyway
