Before buying a first gun my suggestion is to first attend a NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting, or NRA Defensive Pistol Course.

If you're reasons for purchase are for personal protection / home defense, then attending a CCDW or what ever you're state calls their concealed weapons program and attend their class.

I own 9 different Glocks in addition to several other firearms and have been a competition shooter for over 50 years.

Each one has advantages and disadvantages over the others.

It's kind of like going to a winery to the tasting room, you just gotta try them all to find out what you prefer.

That being said, my opinion is that the Glock 17 and Glock 19 are at the top of the list.

My CC 24/7 is the Glock 23.

Old thread, but I just got 'a say: I love my G-19, and consider it to be the perfect size pistol. (Found out the other day that Hickok45 agrees with me, too!)

Hello Klush, I'm new here, but I wanted to add something to the replies that you have received. I am a big fan of the Glock pistols. I do not believe that they are perfect, even if Glock uses the phrase "Glock Perfection."

But they are a fine pistol, and they are usually quite reliable. Personally, I favor the 9mm Glocks. I have nearly every frame size, including the 17, 19, 26 and the 17L. One thing that I have noticed is that every frame size fits the hand differently. I think that if you go to a gunstore, you should hold every model and just see which size feels the best in your hand and also see which pistol points most naturally for you. I started with a 17 and later I discovered that the 19 pointed most naturally for me. The model 17L was also a very natural pointing pistol for me, I suppose that it was because of the longer and heavier slide and barrel. Everyone is unique and what fits my hand very well might be awful for the next guy. Good luck to you, and please let us know what you purchased and how you like it.

Larry

P.S. You might want to also look at other makes of pistols and see what you think. Personally, I like Glocks, 1911's, Browning Hi Powers and also the Walther pistols. My EDC is a Walther PPS in 9mm.
