When using the Rack-rip-work drill which to me is
1.lock the slide open
2.remove the mag.
3.work the slide three times
4.reload

My question is why wouldn't it be better to
1.remove the mag
2.work the slide
3.reload

To me this would allow two ways for the shell/bullet to exit the pistol and remove a step.

Please tell me where my thinking is in error.

thanks.

In many cases, when you have a double-feed/type-3 malf that requires L/R/W, the magazine won't come out. The pressure of the slide on the half-fed round keeps the magazine from coming free, so you have to relieve the pressure on the magazine before you can remove it. Hence, you lock the slide back first.
