I bought an NEF-Handi rifle -- 45-70, synthetic stock -- about two yearsOn 2001-10-30 22:39, catmath 1911 wrote:
Does anyone have any personal experience with this rifle or any other NEF rifle? I was thinking of using it as a varmit/target/deer rifle,
ago. $189. It was an impulse purchase. I put a Williams sight on it, and
tweaked the main spring to lighten the trigger pull ever so
slightly. Embarrassing as it is to admit, it's my favorite rifle. It's accurate
enough. (I've never shot it at a 'proper' target. I stopped measuring groups,
quit shooting from the bench, and shoot at paper plates) Handloading 45-70 is a
gas -- there are so many cool bullet types.
I'd recommend a Handi-Rifle in 308 for you. You could mount a scope on it. If
you handload, the 308 *could* work for varmints, and for deer and targets, it
is just about perfect. Since it's only $200, you could spend a bundle on a
good glass.
It's just a cheap fun rifle. I added a butt cuff for extra ammo, and it's
really fun to try and do 'fast' reloads with a single shot. I haven't hunted
in 15 or 20 years, but I feel pretty confidant I could take most any game
animal in North America, under 100 yards. Some buddies want to go pig hunting
and I think this rifle would be perfect. I mean, all the bench rest stuff is
cool, but have you ever carried a 10 pound rifle? Shooting a plain, simple
rifle brought all the fun back to shooting for me.
On second thought, maybe I'm not the guy to ask. I'm butchering a Mauser in my
garage and am going to paint the whole thing cammo. I sold my Remington 700 to
buy the Mauser and a Marlin 30-30. I'm drawn to cheap rifles.
