Another "what if" scenario:
You are a uniformed police officer and you get to pick your duty weapon. Auto or revolver, single action, double action, safe action, fast action, DAO, it's your choice. One restriction - no wild, $3000 custom pistols. I think it's more interesting if it's an "off-the-rack" pistol, or something with very few modifications (new sights and trigger work is fine).
So what do you pick, and why do you pick it? Get specific.

Here's mine: Glock 22, because it is light-weight, accurate, reliable in all sorts of grit, muck, or mud, has a very tough finish so it will withstand adverse conditions without corrosion, and has a high capacity of a round I like - .40S&W

I would pick either a Sig Saur P229 or P226 in .40S&W. Both have adequate capacity in this cartridge (how many times do you plan to miss?). Highly reliable and easy to shoot. Glock has a lot going for it, but the Sigs are more comfortable to shoot. Accessories: Night Sights, Trigger job, short trigger (for small hands). That's it. Reliable, powerful, comfortable, easy to use.

As much as am fond of Sigs would pick a G34 or 35 WITHOUT their mushy 3.5 conn. or a G21 and have Teddy Jacobson do an action job. Novak's or Heinie's but with only front Trit. dot.

Where am I and what is my duty/responsibility?
As a normal patrol officer for general Patrol Duty:
If I am in an semi populated to populated urban area, my gun is a high cap .357 Sig P229/P226 or if I cannot get one it is a .40 S&W with Winchester Ranger ammo.
If I am in a densly populated area, it is a Glock or Walther high cap .9mm with +2 floor plates and Winchester +P+ 127 gr. Ranger ammo.

If I am in a semi rural area, my duty gun is a .45acp 1911 or Glock model 21 with Winchester Ranger 230gr +P or Hornandy 230gr +P ammo.
Secondary gun, Benelli M3 or M1 with Federal Tactical slug loads.

For VIP/Plain clothes work the same gun designs in the semi compact models 229, G23, commander 1911, G36.
with the following ammo changes,
9mm Remington 115gr +P+ Golden Saber.
40 S&W Black Hills .155gr XTP loading.
.357 Sig Winchester 127 grain Ranger Talon.
.45 ACP Federal 230gr Hydra Shock.
For VIP work while traveling or priamry location in a rural environment,
Two custom 1911, STI frame Hi Cap 10mm pistols with Winchester Silvertip ammo, right and left hand.

Series 70 Colt 1911 with a "reliability" package by someone I trust, Heinie sites [with night front dot], no ambi safety...since I can't carry a "custom" S&W J frame as a backup in 9x23 with moons.

Sig 226 .40 S&W with night sights. No way I'm packing a Glock or any other pistol without a manual safety lever, that includes revolvers also. You don't plan on getting your gun taken away in a scuffle or what not but hey, shit happens. The time it takes for them to figure out the safety may save your life.

Hey et45, you might want to think twice about that Sig then. It has no manual safety, only a decocking lever.

I am sure I have the right answer. What is it? A glock 30, or a Glock 19, or a Glock 27. Wrong? Try again. A Browning 9mm High-Power (HP), a Browning 40 S&W HP, or a Browning 9mm BDM. A Springfield 1911A1 (loaded), a Ruger P90 or P97, and I like Colt and Kimbers, too. I am not sure there is a wrong answer. Today's handguns are as a group that good. Regards, Richard

O_O;;

I guess I'd take my Glock30 .45acp in that case.

Series 70 Colt 1911a1 .45 ACP. Obviously modified how
I'd prefer it, but I could live and be happy with one
right out of the box as long I'd shot it a fair amount
to 'debug' it if needed.
