I have inherited an old Mauser that was rebarreled. I have no idea what chambering the gun is in now. I have been told by a local gunsmith the only way to know is to pour a Cast of the chamber. The gun isn't worth much over $150. I don't want to spend half of that to verify the gun is shootable. So is there a way to pour a cast of the chamber at home? What is involved in doing it in the first place?
I have recently found out that I can make a casting of the chamber with either a Bismuth alloy specifically for this purpose or I can use hard candle wax.
My next problem is how do I find a listing of chamber measurements? I need the list so I can compare the cast to them. Any help?
Is there another way to determine the chambering of an unknown gun? If not I may just retire it and keep it as a wall hanger.
I thank you all for your help.
