[38 Super Combat Commander]

What do you guys think of the pre 80`s Colt Commanders.

Funny you should ask - today I thought enough of the Commander to buy my first, a Series 70 in .38 S. Once "IT" arrives (which won't be soon enough) and some range time is expended, I'll not only be happier, but better able to provide a meaningful response.

In the meantime I'll resign myself to read with great interest and anticipation other posts on this topic ... and wait.

RogerD,My Commander is also a Pre 80`s 38 super.It is my favorite gun and carry gun.I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

The single best 1911 I ever fired (non customized) was a Pre 80 Commander. I sold it to buy some other stuff a long while back. WHUMP WHUM WHUMP. That's the sound of me kicking myself.

Hello. In a word,"Yes." I have a brace of Colt Commanders. They were made either in the early '70s or early '60s. Both have been lightly modified by a local 'smith, Lou Williamson. They have high visibility fixed sights, armalloyed steel parts except for the slides which are blk. parkerized and e-nickled frames. The e-nickle was chosen to coat the aluminum frames after the front straps and mainspring housings were checkered 20lpi. At the time I had this work done, the current rage in wide grip safeties was just catching on. Later, when I saw the light, I added Pachmayer wide grip safeties so that I wouldn't have to have the gun's frame refinished. They work fine.

These make dandy carry guns and are in a caliber most respect.

38 Super Combat Commander your posts are mostly responsible for my interest in this caliber on the CC format. Yesterday I aquired a 38S CC on faith. I was a local gun store and spied the pistol tucked into a corner of the ".45" and 1911 case. I asked the clerk "Whats that? May I see it." It felt perfect unlike any commander ever. Very strange. The clerk said that it was a Super and that if he had known it was in the case I would not have seen it. Seems he collects .38s CC's. The tag indicated that the gun had just cleared pawn that afternoon. So,I put down all the cash I had on hand and traded in my .45 five inch Colt"s 1991 carry gun,at a loss, yet I am strangly content. I'll shoot it soon. Also, I have a post on production 1911's about lighting slots in the slide and extractor. I would appreciate any feed back. Thanks, Calthrop.

Calthrop congrats on the new Commander.I think you will fall in love with it.The 38 Super is a perfect round for the Commander(at least I think so).AS to the extractor question,I can`t help you there maybe one of the gunsmiths here on the forum can.I trust my life almost every day with mine and problebly always will.I know there are alot of people out there that will say it`s a mouse gun but to me it is the best gun for me to shoot and shoot good.

I dont trade or sell any Commander I acquire, I like them. I will sell or trade others but not Commanders.

I saw a 9mm CC at a gunshop on the way home from the SW Winter Nationals. My shooting Partner won a SW 45 at the shoot and we were arranging to import the gun. I looked down into the case and there was a 9mm CC for 250.00. I looked at my partner and said "this is what you should get for your wife to shoot IDPA". Oh dopey me, he bought it and she loves it. Oh well there are others out there and God willing I'll find them. I also sold him a satin 70 series 45 CC 3 years ago. Where's my head? Don't answer that, I already know.

Stopped at a shop, and was shown a satin nickled 70 series 38 Super. Got to kidding about it, Good or Bad deal? :lol:Mike

Just a range report. Picked up the 70 series last night and went to the range after work today. The nickeled and two blued magazine and the "Old Commander" ran everything! Not a glitch to be found (other than looking for the brass :roll:. It's my first 38 Super and it's a keeper. Mike

I love them... I have owned mostly Commander's over the years... They just felt better for me, the balance, the weight, visually, everything seemed correct.

I only recently started getting back into the longer 5" guns, and while I do own a LWT now, and will add to that, I don't have any of the same concerns about carrying a 5" that I used to, though I do prefer the 26oz LWT over the 40 oz Full Size.

I am with Ken... I don't think I will ever sell or trade another one... I definately wish I still had many of the ones I have previously owned.

BAH, I thought my LW 38 was something unique, now it seems everyone and their brother has one.

I just got a brand new Gov Enhanced, and am trying to sell my Browning to help pay for it. Might as well, get rid of the 38 Commander if everyone has one....

I had a pair of lightweights in 45.
There was only one problem.
I sold one of them.
I never claimed to be smart.
The other now has a Marvel top, works fine.

Commanders[Series 70 or earlier] are great in the lightweight configuration..Steel [Combat} Commanders are heavy enoungh that
a standard govt model might as well be carried..The only diference is 3/4" of slide and bbl..

Introduced in 1949, the true Commander[lightweight] had the exposed extractor[as seen from the bottom of thr slide] until about the time the series 70 guns were produced, I believe..I used to think the early guns with the LW suffix were the ones with this feature but have a CLW prefixed 9mm that has it, so I was wrong on that assumption for sure.

Have three .45ACP Commanders and one 9mm..Carry one almost daily, and have for years..Bet the aluminum frames wouldn't go anywhere near 100k rounds though; that's why we have Govt models..
