How do you make the safety "click" when you put it on safe. I fit the safety snug to the sear so its hard to put on safe but there is no click. should I take more material off the safety?

This "click" you mention is not a design feature of the 1911, it is a function of the thumb safety plunger slipping off a high spot and dropping into a dwell as it is engaged. Full measure of SOUND and fury, but signifying little or nothing else than the safety is up into engagement. The silent ones work as effectively as the lound ones, in most instances. (Especially as one gets older and deafer from years of shooting .45 acp rounds of varying intensity.
