Hi,
I'm thinking about getting a G17 and shortening the grip to G19 length. I like the long slide look. I'm interested in hearing from anyone else who has done this or had it done. Would you do it again? Did you have the hump removed as well? How do you like it?
As a side question, will Glock ever make a .45 between the G21 and G30 in size? The G19 grip seems to fit me perfectly. I'd love to have a .45 the same size.

My friend (who is not a gunsmith) cut the grip of his G17 using a hacksaw and dremel tool, he did not remove the hump though. We call his modified gun the 17Short or 19Long. It works perfectly. I've shot several hundred rounds through it. You have the best of both world, the compact grip for concealment of a G19 and the longer barrel/sight radius of a G17.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I think that I'm going to go for it.

I took the plunge last night. I measured the length of the different magazines front and back to get the dimensions of what needed to be cut away. Marked the frame with an exacto knife, put the cutting blade in the dremel and went to work free hand cutting very slowly.
First I cut away only the mag well area. I left the channel in place. Unfortunately the back of the 19 mag rubbed on the solid area that is shared by the back of the mag well and the front of the channel, so I had to cut that away too.
I got a very flat cut that was not quite enough. So I took off just a hair more, just enough that the magazine base does not contact the bottom of the grip. I still need to file it flat and bevel the inside of the mag well.
It looks good. Not quite the long slide look that I was hoping for, but now I can use all the G19 magazines that I've accumulated. I haven't decided what to do about the channel. I'm going to get a "plug" and try to match the angle, then seat the plug and leave it like that for a spell.
I'm glad that I did it. I'm probably going to remove the hump at some point, but that work may be beyond my ability. I spoke to a local gunsmith yesterday who has done the channel removal surgery. He told me to fill the channel with epoxy, let it set, then remove material. I'm considering farming that out to someone with experience doing it. I'll keep you up to date. I'll probably wind up getting another G17 and doing it the same way. It's always good to have a second gun set up identically to your primary carry gun. The glock is going to replace my Beretta Custom Carry. Strictly a weight saving effort.

I noticed that Dane offers this service for $100. Seems like a fair price to pay to eliminate the guesswork and have the job done professionally.

I've seriously considered a G22 cut down to use G23 mags. Anyone out there have this modification done without the recontouring of the grip?

Add $25 shipping each way. It's worth my time to save that kind of money. I did the final shortening with sand paper to keep everything even. I bevelled the mag well with sand paper. Finished with 1200 grit wet-dry paper. Looks good to me.
I've thought about removing the hump, but I want to shoot one that someone else has done that to before I'd do it. I've been told that the hump acts like a shock absorber, and removing it makes a big difference in the felt recoil.
Some thought I was nuts. Several have tried it and liked it, but can't make themselves do it too.

Welcome indriver99. I don't think you'll get replies from anybody who posted before you in this thread...check the dates...

Don't be embarrassed, this board was a hub of INactivity for quite a while at various times. I replied to mega-old threads here a time or two myself.
