Thought I'd call the G-Man today, and get his opinion on a couple of things. Told him I got my conceal/carry permit, and wanted to know what his recommendations were for the proper hardware. I told him I was considering a 1911. He asked if I was prepared to carry it in Condition 1, and he asked if I knew what he meant. I assured him I did, and told him I would probably carry it that way with an empty chamber for a while, just to see how it would do with my daily activities. He said, "The 1911 is a great military piece. In the military, you know when you're headed for trouble, and you get the gun ready. In civilian life, your gun is there for emergencies, and you don't know when they are coming. You don't want to fiddle with safeties and such, you don't have time. I recommend a revolver. You can get the ballistic equivalent with a .44 special, which is a target round. The revolver is always ready. That would be my personal choice. If you are determined to use a 1911, I would say to look no further than a Kimber. No one makes a better pistol. You can't go wrong with one of those babies, they're excellent weapons." I asked him if he was familiar with the Valtro, and he said he was not.

The opinion of G. Gordon, probably a bit paraphrased, but it is pretty close to what I remember hearing him tell me.

While Liddy can be admired for being man enough to not turn rat when all around him were and for hosting an entertaining talk show, his views on weaponcraft are rather dated. They reflect what he was taught in the FBI...many moons ago. Much progess has been made since then, both in technique and hardware. Liddy's viewpoints on this subject have simply been overtaken by events.
