Just got back from the range...and shot a few rounds out of a newly aquired Springfield. Wow..shooting factory winchester both the silvertip and softpoint the gun was a joy....groups could be covered by a quarter at 15 yards (handheld) and when shooting at a reasonable speed opened up to the size of small fist. I think the recoil was very gentle for the velocity claimed by the manufacturer. The gun has been up graded with a EB gripsafety, thumbsafety and SA magwell/MSH and CMC carbon fiber trigger. The trigger weight and letoff are reasonable and I may have this worked on as well as new sights.
I do have a question though. Is it worth getting the barrel replaced with a match barrel? It would have to be ramped as that was the wisdom of Springfield. Or should i just get it recrowned? or just leave alone. the factory fit seems good when compared to others I have seen. the barrel doesn't seem to have much play when in lockup. Anybody else have one? and what is your experience. I think I just got bit by the 9x23 bug..but I have always loved the 38 super.

Quarter size groups at 15 yards?
Fist size groups at practical speeds?
Sounds like you and the gun are both doing your part.
Why mess with it?

If it needs dehorning I'd understand. But what do you expect to accomplish by crowning the barrel? By replacing the barrel?
It might be worse with a different barrel.

Does it work reliably?
Then leave it alone.

Randy,

I usually don't have the attention to shoot that well, but today the stars and moon must have been aligned right. It was a great afternoon, see the sight, press the trigger and see the group.
I really don't know what I'd accomplish switching out barrels...guess it's that tendency not to leave anything alone...Guess I'll leave it for now....worry about it later..Thanks for the slap of reality.

Play with it. Grind on it. Change whatever isn’t broken. Make it better than it was before. Fix everything, twice.

After all, I can’t have you beating me in ESP with a single stack... However, beating Alderson shooting minor in L-10 would be fun to watch.

Seriously, it sounds like its running. How is it grouping at 50? More than 4 inches, have Gary put in a Kart barrel.

Best yet, I have your Smith 940 and you don’t... Neeners.

If I could Kimball near a mill you bet it would be done already...oh well, those were the good old days. No more having a pistolsmith at my backdoor. See ya monday night.

I have a SA 9x23 and mine shoots about the same as yours. With different ammo some groups are bigger some are smaller. Is the gun reliable? For combat accuracy and reliability you've got all you need. The only problem with mine is the lower lug seems to be starting to peen the frame. Its hitting at the front of the cut made for the ramp on the supported barrel. Think I'll call SA and see what they say. Happy shooting.

Thanks eerw...

You headed to the shoot with Hozer?

I think I bagged a frame from him with some goodies to build a lil' pocket pistol with...
Should be kinda interesting...Kinda' mini-1911 like thingee...Don't know if I'll use the 9x23 for "it" though...Have to be an awful short barrel...

Good Luck if you're off to the match, ya'll bring back the goodies!!!

Hey Gyp_C

Unfortunately, I'm not off having a good time with Hoser. Instead at mine and wife's folks house (they live near each other) dealing with a terminal illness inthe family. But that is a whole 'nother long story. Good luck on your new project...That gets me thinking about needed something to do..later

Sorry to hear about that...I lost my mom in '98 and never did get over it...I didn't get a chance to tell her goodbye...She died alone in a hospital with no family around her...I didn't even know she was ill...

I envy you the opportunity to take care of your relatives...I'd give anything for that...Give me a call or drop me a note...My e-mail is available and I'll give you my phone# when you write...

Take care...
