The Cadet/Midshipmen Combat Arms Shooting Teams will go head to head once again this year at the range in Old Bridge NJ.

I would like to thank the Old Bridge club and staff for taking time away from the families on Easter Weekend to help us out.

If you live in the area, look me up. Shooting starts at 8:00 Saturday. GO AIR FORCE!!!!!!

Tom- Does the U.S. Naval Academy still have a combat shooting team? I was an instructor there 1990-1993, during which time I started a practical shooting program. I passed it on to my relief, and I was curious if it was still going. The USNA funded it pretty well; during the three years I was there we aquired, among other things, Safariland competition rigs (007 Final Options), a bunch of Arntzen steel targets for the ranges, and a Dillon 1050 to load our own ammo. The naval station also threw in 20K rounds of .45 hardball and use of the armory pistols (old 1911s).

They sure do still have a team. The program you started has developed into an IDPA team of sorts. Seems as though the AF showed up one year with a new coach (me) who trained them like an IPSC team. They proceeded to clean everyone’s clock and the following year anything to do with IPSC gaming was outlawed. Now we have a twist on IDPA rules for a rulebook. We had to fight just to be allowed to use standard belt holsters. Seems as though Army wants thigh holsters to be mandatory.

Myself and Lt. Kapusta from the Navy will be writing a new rulebook next month.

I am glad to have met the man who started the Navy Team. I cant imagine how hard it was to start cause its a pain to keep going. Let me know if you would like some pictures from the match.

The match was great. My guys didn’t do so well. It was a tough fight for third, but we won that division. Army took top honors with Navy a close second. We did have two shooters in the top 4 places though. There was close to 45 cadets and midshipmen this year.

Like I have always said with IPSC/IDPA (any competition for that matter,) it’s not how good your best is, it’s how bad your worst is.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Old Bridge Gun Club for letting us use the range this weekend. More than that, I would really like to thank John Soltesz and Henry Shio who made it all possible and put off Easter for a few hours to let my cadets shoot. Without John, Henry and their RO's, it never would have happened.

Now to get my guys to some IDPA matches so we don’t get our asses handed to us again next year.
