This is a original military 1911 from late in 1918 by Colt and so marked.

The engraving is "C" or better by John Adams Sr. the longest tenured Colt master engraver to date.

So what do you think? Should I turn this into my "shooter".

No 1911 is too pretty to shoot  And yes you can take the old spur hanmmers like this and fit them with some effort to the newest beavertails but I would suggest a Caspian or Wilson so you get the hammer a little lower.

Bufford, that is the problem, I have the thing on a three day inspection and for the change I can buy a couple of fairly nice 1911s. Can't decde if I want to keep this one to shoot or box it up and ship it back:(

Gonna take soem work to make it inot something I would teach with....but i have grown to like the look classic look and statement.

Someone compared this one to Clint's engraved Baer and I laughed. That is like comparing a new Vette with a classic 1947 Ferrarri roadster  rotflmao

I don't see the problem, you know all that custom work is just a "crutch" for people that can't shoot to begin with... I think you should send it to me, I can teach with it  (of course I might say anyting to get my hot little hands on it).

See you in a couple weeks (and I hope you have it with you!)

Best regards,

You guys are killing me...slept on it and decided I didn't really need a scratched gun. Got up this morning and all my buddies want it  But then Jim would just throw it in the dirt and Randy will hide it with his Swenson.

First time I've had this delima

Thanks for the help and in particular the Ferarri info

Now bear in mind this is coming from someone who would drive a '47 Ferrari, yes, shoot the thing at least once.

Yeah you're right...I always figured those "pretty" guns couldn't shoot anyway...Just put it in some glass somewhere...That's what it was prettied up for...Lookin' at...

Dane if you do decide to keep the pistol, where are you going to put the the thistle?

You said, "The thistle is part of my personal heritage and fits me as a person, some might say."

I don't think the scratched up pistol is the way to go. But as you know I'm partial to scallops.

Good luck with your decision.

The more I think about that and your posts on the "history" of 1911s and the Rangers legacy...That thing is "you"...that's the one to make yours from now on and use it the way it was meant to be used. Please don't store that pistol away in a safe where no one will see it except in pictures. Make it yours and let everyone you meet identify it with you.
Every once in a while ya' gotta' rob the collectors and just let what's supposed to be a natural progression take place. I know someone else is gonna' lock it up and sell it to some sheik over there and none of us'll ever see it again...

...that one belongs on your hip...
