Hello. I currently don't have any of the 230XTPs loaded and cannot find my notes for LOA, but I load them just a bit longer than does Hornady in their factory loads. I use 7.0 gr Unique in WCC cases with a Federal or Winchester Large Pistol Primer.
Lodraw,I have'nt used the XTP bullets. But I have used W231 with 230 Winchester JHP for some pinloads. My Speer #11 manual shows 6.2 gr of W231 as max load for 230 ball.I have used this load.In brass cases I get a slight flattening of primer.Using +P Remington cases I get no signs of excess pressure.I load to 1.225",using Win.LP primers.Loads averaged 908 fps shot through 5" Kart NM barrel.Interestingly the same batch shot with my Baer PII averaged 26 fps less.
I think AA#5 powder would be a better choice.I have seen data that suggests higher velocity with lower pressures.I plan on working up some loads using this powder.
I believe there is a difference between Hornady reloading manual 4th edition and 5th edition for .45 acp. I would be interested if someone could list like specifications for me.
The 5th edition lists for 230gr bullets #45160 hp-xtp col 1.230, #45177 fmj-rn enc col 1.230,#45187 fmj-fp enc 1.200.
I use WIN231 and understand it may not be the best selection for xtp loads but thats what I have on hand. I am concerned about the differences between loading manual revision and col. Appreciate your input thanks.
Thanks gyp_c2, I don't like the low col of fmj in the revised manual. I know they have checked everything out but feel using say 1.240 instead of 1.230 is a better choice for me. I will look into this further thought.
